Sophia’s Heart Community Outreach
By Irene Kennedy & Rachel Brown
The Chesapeake Business Centre is abuzz more than usual these days, and it’s no secret that much of the excitement is centered around our recent remodel. There have been questions circling about what has been done with the old lighting and furniture, so we are pleased to take this opportunity to share with you the story of Sophia’s Heart.
Sophia’s Heart is a non-profit organization founded by Daniel Gokey (American Idol, 3rd Place 2010). Inspired by his late wife Sophia, Gokey has dedicated his life to mending the hearts of children and families who have been touched by unemployment, poverty, and sickness. Originally founded in Milwaukee, Sophia’s Heart has expanded to Nashville and established the only shelter in the city that accepts entire families. Currently the 77,000 square foot facility located in east Nashville is in desperate need of expansion in order to provide comfortable living space for its residents.
The Chesapeake Business Centre has donated the used lighting and furniture from both facilities to help this cause, but there is still much more work to be done. Volunteers are needed to assist in everything from painting rooms to financial counseling. Monetary donations are always welcome; however, goods and services are vital. Currently, the biggest needs are operational: washers, dryers, refrigerators, new computers, as well as towels, toiletries, and new mattresses. Books are also in great need for children and adults alike. As for donations of food, fresh vegetables and meat are in greatest demand.
Compassion Nashville is much more than a homeless shelter; it is dedicated to breaking the cycle of homelessness and keeping families together.
